Implications of dx^2-y^2 Pairing Symmetry for High-Temperature Superconductivity in the Cuprates

In recent years, several phase sensitive tests of pairing symmetry making use of the half-integer flux quantum effect have provided convincing evidence for an order parameter with dx^2-y^2 symmetry. In this short review, we concentrate on experiments using crystals with controlled orientations. In particular, we will present new evidence for pure dx^2-y^2 pairing in cuprate superconductors. The implications of dx^2-y^2 pairing on our understanding of high temperature superconductivity will be briefly discussed.
