摘要

郎尼根以認知活動作為反思宇宙演化的出發點。認知者∕人是在世存有者演化至有心智意識的時份，容許我們舉一反三地從知識的增長中體會萬物起伏浮沉的昇進。正如人的「純求知欲」指望著認知「存有」，宇宙的「導向動力」展望著臻至「完成」，以致我們可把宇宙萬物的「究極目的」體認為在世存有者的內在潛能，從中觸發起導向性的動力、引領著萬有邁向終極的圓滿。郎尼根尚且引用11個論點來詳析「究極目的」之義蘊，藉此給古典形上學之「目的因」提供了細緻而深入的闡釋與補充。

Taking cognitional activity as a starting point for reflecting upon the meaning of finality, Lonergan indicates an isomorphism between man's knowing process and the evolving tendency of the universe, with human desire to know as the underlying directed dynamism of the proportionate being reaching the state of becoming rationally conscious. With this recognition as a basis, Lonergan comes to define finality as an inner potency within every finite being, dynamically directing the whole universe heading for a final completion which is still to be anticipated.
