I have selected the late Ch’ing and early Republican era for this study due to the availability of rich and complete collections of fine bow shoes for foot bound women available with in this period. In my research, the shoes have been systematically organized, analyzed, compared, recorded, and a comprehensive investigation conducted into the similarities, differences, and defining features of the various shoes in terms of style, colors, and embroidery patterns on the shoes. After careful consideration to the large geographical size of China and the complex proliferation of these shoes and related materials, I decided to initially select the artifacts primarily from four regions: Taiwan, closely related Fujian, coastal Shandong, and inland Shanxi.
