This paper applies the Poetics of Four Elements by Bachelard to integrate the theory of Carnivals by Bakhtin to study the poetry of Bai Ling. The description of ascendance and descendance in terms of carnivalization is the subversion of the upper and lower. The heaven will become the hell and the hell will become the heaven. Carnivalization refers to the lower parts of the hell and body. Hence the major part is descendance. Bai Ling writes the poems of shadows, the hell, and dismemberment. All of these are the imagination of the hell. The poet's representative works like ”Tea Drinking” and ”the Kite” share the characteristic of descendance also.
