The Environmental Risk Perceptions of Residents Living in Neighborhood of Kaohsiung Port and Risk Strategies

This article investigates the environmental risk perceptions of residents living in neighborhood of Kaohsiung Port in Taiwan. Using surveyed data collected from questionnaires, the multiple linear regression (MLR) model was used to examine the research hypotheses. We obtained several important findings in this empirical study. Firstly, the risk perceptions index of local residents indicates that pollutions produced in port operation become threats to health. Secondly, poor experiences of local residents, accept pollution levels of local residents, the perceived probability of environmental contamination occurred, environmental pollution trust and credibility of information, local residents are related to the living distance from harbor, age, income level are key risk factors for the environmental risk perceptions of residents. Finally, we proposed several suggestions for government, port industry and residents living in neighborhood to gain supports and trust of residents and to make the Kaohsiung Port sustainable development.
