Russia's position on the Korean Peninsula situation includes the following aspects: Russians are quite fearful of the possibility of military conflict with close proximity to its borders and they would prefer not to have unified pro-American Korea bordering the Far-Eastern region of the RF. Russia criticizes the deployment of the American missile defense system with nuclear capability in the South. The diplomatic solution that Russia traditionally advocates, includes the following points: the DPRK's commitment to renouncing nuclear weapons and all existing nuclear programs and rejoining as soon as possible the Non-Proliferation Treaty; USA statement concerning the absence of hostile intentions towards the DPRK and its willingness to normalize bilateral relations with Pyongyang; respect for the North Korea's right to peaceful use of nuclear energy; promotion of the military détente on the Korean Peninsula, dismantling of the confrontational infrastructure and establishment of the properly functioning mechanism for peace and security in North-East Asia.
