Web Resources for Teaching Pharmacology

並列摘要

It has been estimated that there are at least 300 million documents covering everyconceivable topic that have been lodged electronically on the World Wide Web(WWW)and this could be expanding by as many as l million documents per day.A very smallproportion represents a valuable resource for teaching pharmacology but finding theseresources and delivering them to students in a cost-effective and simple manner is verydifficult. The Teaching Section of the International Union of Pharmacology(IUPHAR)iscompiling a meta database of Web sites relevant to the teaching of pharmacology andclassifying/grading the usefulness of these sites. These sites contain lecture notes, interactive multi-choice questions and multi-media material such as video clips that demonstrate the behavioural actions of drugs, thereby reducing the need to use laboratory animals for teaching neuropharmacology. These sites will be'hot linked'from the centralIUPHAR Home Site(www.iuphar.org).Rather than have all students connected to theWWW which can be expensive and also a distraction if the students visit other sites during class,we have made use of an offline browser software package,PaperMaster LiveTM(DocuMagix Inc.,San Jose,CA).This program downloads and stores whatever documents are selected by the instructor and stores them in native format(HTML)so thatthey look exactly as they did on-line while maintaining all hot links.Documents can benamed and stored in folders which are filed in drawers in the image of a filing cabinet. When all relevant Web documents have been selected, the material can be distributedto the hard disk on the student's computer via a server or via a CD-ROM.
