Correlations Between Ming Scan Foot-4 Foot Analysis System and Common Clinical Indexes for Arch Measurement

Background and Purpose: Clinically, it is common to use the degree of collapse of the medial longitudinal arch to determine functional flatfoot. A footprint indicator has the ability to directly display the shape of foot arches and conveniently provide explanations for each case, but the footprint indicator has to use inkpads or expensive optical equipment, which would be difficult to use in clinical practice. The Ming Scan Foot (MSF)-4 foot analysis system has the advantage of repetitive usage and computer assisted analysis, which would be more convenient for clinical workers to operate. This study used the MSF-4 foot analysis system to investigate: (1) correlation between the arch index, Navicular Drop Test, and the Foot Posture Index and (2) whether the foot index of normal and functional flatfoot consistent with the Navicular Drop Test and the Foot Posture Index. Methods: The present study recruited 24 testers (normal foot: 12; flatfoot: 12) to perform and measure the Navicular Drop Test and the Foot Posture Index and used the pressure-sensitive footprint indicator (MSF-3 Vers) to measure the foot arch index. Pearson's correlation coefficient and kappa statistic were used for statistical analysis. Results: Study results showed that the foot arch index and the Navicular Drop Test were positively correlated (p < 0.01). If grouping was performed using the arch index measurement results, there would be a significant consistent with the Navicular Drop Test and the Foot Posture Index (k score= 0.92, p < 0.01). Conclusions: This study used the MSF-foot analysis system to measure the arch index, which was positively correlated and highly consistent with the Navicular Drop Test and the Foot Posture Index. In addition, the system can be used to determine normal foot and flatfoot and as a clinical screening or auxiliary diagnosis tool.
