Factors Associated With Sedentary Behaviors Among Primary School Students in New Taipei City

Quality of life (QOL) is the most important subjective measure for the government performance. Identification of underprivileged minorities at an early stage can help the society to maintain a sustainable QOL for all people. Sedentary lifestyle has become a major health issue that affects QOL of people. This study aimed to investigate the association between sedentary behaviors (television viewing, computer use, and reading/study) of schoolchildren and educational level of their parents in 29 administrative districts of New Taipei City. In this study, the questionnaires were distributed to all primary school students. A total of 38,967 participants completed the survey, with a return rate of 90.3%. The results showed that about 25.0% of parents in New Taipei City hold a college degree or above. Time spent in watching television was longer for students from Linkou, Xindian, and other sparsely populated areas, while people from Bali, Wanli, and Shimen areas spent shorter time on television viewing. A significant negative correlation was found between television viewing time and regional ranks on percentage of parents with college degree in New Taipei City, whereas positive correlation was noticed between the rank and reading time. We conclude that the sedentary lifestyle behavior of primary schoolchildren in New Taipei City was associated with parental education level, suggesting possible influence of parents' awareness on sedentary behavior of their children. Our study raised a new question, whether real estate price can be a selecting factor for family settlement, which might shape the peer environment based on the parental educational status. New policies should be taken by the government to decrease the disparity for the sake of next generation.
