戦後「日本人論」の70年－「集団主義」説をめぐる言説の変遷と現状－

1948年、べネディクトの『菊と刀』日本語版が出版されて以来、これに影響を受けた、いわゆる「日本人論」というジャンルの書物が数多く生み出されてきた。それらに影響を与えた内容とは、西洋の「罪の文化」の対立軸に置かれる「恥の文化」であり、西洋の「個人主義」と対立軸をなす「集団主義」のことである。特に後者は「日本人＝集団主義」という構図を創出し、否定的側面、肯定的側面双方から語られることによって、その構図をさらに強固なものとし、そのイメージを不動のものとしてきた。そのイメージは日本国内のみならず、海外においても定着し、国の内外を問わず共有されるイメージとなって今日に至っている。本論では『菊と刀』にはじまる戦後「日本人論」の流れを「日本人＝集団主義」という構図からながめ、それが時代の流れを反映しながら、どのように変遷してきたのか、また日本の社会構造の大きな変化によって、今後展開されるであろう「日本人論」がどのようになるのかを述べてみたい。

自1948年，露絲．潘乃德《菊與刀》之日文版（長谷川松治譯）出版之後，受到該書內容影響，所謂的「日本人論」相關書籍接二連三地出版。而《菊與刀》影響「日本人論」之內容為與西洋「罪的文化」相對立之「恥的文化」、以及與西洋「個人主義」相對立之「集體主義」。特別是從後者產生出「日本人＝集體主義」結構，藉由從肯定面、否定面兩方的論述、進一步強化了它的構造，使其形像不可動搖。這樣的形象不僅在日本，而且在海外也已建立、固定下來，形成一種無論在日本國內還是在國外都共有的形象至今。本文中，將以「日本人＝集體主義」之觀點，檢視從《菊與刀》開始的戰後「日本人論」之系譜，以及它如何變遷、反映出時代的變動。同時，描述由於社會結構的重大變化，將來新發展出來的「日本人論」將應該如何建立新的面貌。｜Since 1948, after the publication of the Japanese version of Ruth Benedict's Chrysanthemum and Sword, influenced by the content of the book, a so-called ＂Nihonjin-ron＂ related books have been published one by one. Chrysanthemum and Sword influenced the content of ＂Nihonjin-ron＂ both on the Western ＂Culture of Sins＂ which contrasts to the ＂Culture of Shame＂, and Western ＂Individualism＂ which contrasts to ＂Collectivism.＂ Especially from the latter, it produces the structure of ＂Japanese people= Collectivism＂ either from positive or negative discourse and reinforces its structure to make the structure even more unshakable. Such a phenomenon not only exists and shapes in Japan but also abroad; thus, it has shaped a common image no matter in Japan or abroad. In the paper, a focus would be put on the view point of ＂Japanese people=collectivism＂ and further examine the spectrum of post-war ＂Nihonjin-ron＂ initiated from Chrysanthemum and Sword, and finally tackle on how it transformed and was reflected on social changes of time. In addition, the paper would also describe what new faces that ＂Nihonjin-ron＂ would possibly lead to due to major changes in social structure.
