Paracentral Acute Middle Maculopathy Associated with Branch Retinal Artery Occlusion in A Young Patient: A Case Report and Literature Review

Paracentral acute middle maculopathy (PAMM) associated with branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) is more common in the elderly with certain vascular risk factors. It occurs only rarely in healthy and young individuals, and is associated with various conditions. We report a 19-year-old female with no history of underlying disease who experienced sudden blurred vision of the left eye. Fundus examination and fluorescein angiography showed the development of BRAO. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) revealed typical findings of PAMM. The lesion resolved gradually, with partial recovery in visual acuity. Detailed survey for possible hypercoagubility or another embolic event in young subjects with such a presentation is necessary, and the disease can be detected early by novel imaging modalities.
