Physicians' Prescription Patterns of Antiplatelet Treatment as a Primary Prevention Strategy for Cardiovascular Disease Among Newly-Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients in Taiwan: A Population-Based Study

摘要

This study was designed to investigate physicians' prescription patterns of antiplatelet therapy as a primary prevention strategy for cardiovascular disease in patients with newly-diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) in Taiwan. We examined a Taiwanese Longitudinal Cohort of Diabetes Patients from between 1999 and 2013 to analyze antiplatelet therapy in patients with DM over 20 years of age. We also estimated the duration of sustained use of antiplatelets by the Kaplan-Meier method. After excluding patients with DM who required secondary prevention measures, approximately 26.3% of the remaining patients received antiplatelet drugs as a primary prevention therapy. Prescription of antiplatelet drugs was more common in primary care clinics (38.8%) and relatively less common in medical centers (14.8%). The proportion of patients taking antiplatelets in northern Taiwan was larger (38.6%) than that in eastern Taiwan (6.1%). The median duration of continuous antiplatelet therapy in patients with newly-diagnosed type 2 DM who received antiplatelet therapy within 3 years of diagnosis was 0.47 years. The primary prevention strategy for patients with type 2 DM differs nationwide, and the adherence of patients with continued use to primary prevention drugs in Taiwan is low. Patients with DM require more concise and accurate advice.
