In traditional Chinese Opera, the plot of Chuang-tzu testing his wife in Chuang-tzu Plays evolved into the core plot in the opera from the late Ming Dynasty, which ever since has been favored by writers and playwrights. Also, Feng Menglong's Chuang-tzu's Beat of Bowl at His Wife's Death has become the most important fashioned source text in terms of play adaptation. This paper focuses on the newly complied Chuang-tzu Play Yanzi and His Wife by Zhang Xiaofeng. Based on the three-element framework (prerequisites, characters and conflicts) proposed by American scriptwriter Jagos Egri, the paper tentatively explores how the understanding of human nature in Christrian culture injects into the adaptation of traditional Chinese raw materials via creative transformation.
