Student Perception of a Video Subtitling Assessment Exercise on an EFL British Culture and Language Course

學生對EFL英國文化和語言課程的影片字幕評估練習的看法

摘要


EFL teaching in developed countries is nowadays delivered to the i-generation, especially in highly e-connected countries like Taiwan. Video is now well-established within TEFL; however, while video can be well received by students as a teaching resource, the use of video subtitling as a course assessment task for TEFL/culture students at universities is not well-reported. This study reports on an experiment in which Mandarin-speaking students' created English subtitles for British English video clips as an assessment strategy on an optional British culture and language course at a private university in Taiwan. The author hypothesized that, apart from effectively demonstrating students' learning about British English, such an assessment (a) would be motivating, (b) may further raise cultural awareness, and (c) may be valued as an opportunity to learn a new practical skill. Data derived from students' written reflective commentaries provides clear support for hypothesis (a), and some for (c), while support for hypothesis (b) is less clear. This outcome broadly suggests two things: that the assessment strategy may be maintained and developed on the course, and that further research may be usefully carried out on this topic.

已開發國家的非母語英語教學(EFL)現在已經傳遞到I世代,特別是在如台灣這樣網際網路發達的國家,影片被運用在英語外語教學(TEFL)已廣為大家接受;影片雖然可被學生接受為教學資源,但是對學習英語外語教學(TEFL)及英語文化的大專學生來說,以影片字幕做為大專學生的課程學習評估尚未有足夠的研究報告。本研究報告以台灣一所私立大學的學生為學習觀察對象,探討這些中文為母語的學生在其選修的英國文化與語言這一門課程裡,製作英文影片字幕的學習評估策略。作者假設,除了能有效地展示學生對英式英語的學習之外,這樣的評估(a)具有激勵性,(b)可以進一步提高文化意識,(c)可視為一種新的實用技能的學習機會。來自學生書面反思評論的數據為(a)假設提供了明確的支持,為(c)假設提供了一些支持,而對(b)假設的支持則不那麼明確。此研究結果提出兩點未來研究方向的建議:學習評估策略可以在課程中持續保持並發展,以及值得在此論題上行進一步的研究。
