Discover Japan-|Disappearance and Survival of Memories: Murakami Haruki's Norwegian Wood and Discover Japan Campaign

|Japanese National Railways (Kokutetsu) launched "Discover Japan," a travel campaign after Japan World Exposition (Osaka, Mar. 15th-Sep. 13th 1970). This campaign played a role to represent "Japan" as "country," as an ideological state apparatus. At the time, many media such as literature, movie or music were consumed under the name of "travel." "Travels" in Norwegian Wood (1987) by Murakami Haruki (1949- ) derived from this campaign too. He depicted "travels" to discover "marks" of "absent others" under the influence of The Woman in the Dunes (1962) by Abe Kōbō (1924-1993), who wrote narratives on "disappearance" in the 1960s, and postmodernism in the 1980s. "Survival of Memories" as "marks" in Norwegian Wood derived from Matter and Memory (Matière et mémoire, 1896) by Henri Bergson (1859-1941). Murakami accepted contemporary philosophy and depicted ideology-free "travels," whose political stance was quite different from nationalism of "Discover Japan."
