|Hideo Nishioka (1879-1951), who worked to popularize children's stories while holding important positions in Taiwan companies, is considered to be a "pioneer of the children's educational reform and literary movement in Taiwan." For about 30 years after coming to Taiwan, Nishioka wrote children's literature - a genre started by Sazanami Iwaya - thus creating a vast body of work. Nishioka's early literary achievements include Seiban Otogibanashi which were published in Taiwan Aikoku Fujin, a magazine published by the Taiwanese branch of the Women's Patriotic Association. This story series reproduced legends passed down generations of the native Taiwanese in colloquial direct speech. Taiwan Aikoku Fujin, was a front that supported "suppression of the mountainous regions", and Seiban Otogibanashi contained material that helped achieve the goals behind the publication of this magazine. Some of the stories later appeared in Sekai Dowa Taikei, but during manuscript revision the stories were drastically compressed. Seiban Otogibanashi, whose content cannot be fully expressed in a single moral discourse, are valuable documents that remind us of the violence that becomes inevitable when colonizers talk about the culture of the colonized.
