Investigation and Analysis of Health Behaviors among Residents Attending Community Health Promotion Activities in Da-an District, Taipei City

Purpose: In order to better plan health programs for the residents of Da-An District in Taipei City, the program studied the health behaviors of residents who participated in a series of community health screenings. Methods: A questionnaire of health behaviors was developed. Questions included medical history, sleep, diet and exercise habits, tobacco use and betel-nut chewing. The survey was conducted concurrently with community health screening sessions in eleven of Da-An district's li, or sub-districts from September 2008 through March 2009. Chi square tests and logistic regressions were used to analyze related factors of health behaviors. Results: A total of 494 valid questionnaires were collected, with a response rate of 70.7%. The major demographic participating in community health promotion events in Da-An District was mostly middle-aged or elderly, with twice as many female as male participants. Diabetes, Hypertension, and Hyperlipidemia were the three most common diseases both in their current medical conditions and medical histories. The tobacco use rate (6.9%) and betel-nut chewing rate (0.4%) in Da-An District were lower than the overall average of Taipei city (23.8%, 4.39%). Of the eleven li participated in the survey, the residents of six li showed significant different intakes on edible offal, fatty foods, and nutritional supplements (vitamin). Different gender was also an important factor in determining residents' behaviors. Conclusions: The study found that a resident's gender was a much more effective indicator of health behaviors than the place where he/she lived. Thus health promotion programs similar to those already in place but tailored to the specific needs of different genders, can be implemented throughout Da-An District. According to the study results, more efforts should be put into promoting healthy diet and exercise habits.
