Gender Differences and Listener Responses in Spanish Foreign Language Conversations

This paper investigates the influence of gender on the oral interaction in Spanish as a foreign language. In particular, it explores the listener responses mechanisms of Taiwanese learners in Spanish foreign language through the natural dyadic Spanish conversation conducted by 20 males and 20 females. To insure the internal validity of this study, the researcher has standardized the samples according to age, gender, social status and Spanish language proficiency. The results show quantitative and qualitative gender differences in listener responses behavior between male and female students. The conversation between females is more collaborative and fluent than in male conversation. The reason is that females use more and different listener responses strategies in the oral interaction. This finding has a significant relevance in foreign language classroom learning, because it indicates that the listener responses in the conversation are essential component that contributes to the more natural and spontaneous interaction between learners.
