An Investigative Study on the Factors Influencing the Intention of College Students to Undergo Premarital Health Checks in Taiwan

Purposes Premarital health checks can shed light on the physical health of both partners, who are about to get married as well as the health of their families so that they can give birth to healthy offspring. This study aimed to explore the key factors influencing the intention of Taiwanese college students to undergo premarital health check-ups based on the health belief model and consumer behavioral intent theory. Methods This study recruited college students from across the country and conducted data collection through questionnaires. A total of 933 valid responses were collected. Structural equation modeling was used to estimate the impact model. The intermediary roles played by specific action cues were discussed by analyzing key factors influencing premarital health check intent among Taiwanese college students from the estimated premarital health check intent model and by using specific action cues (such as health education and mass communication) as intermediary variables. Results The results showed that attitude toward premarital health checks is the most significant factor influencing premarital health check intent among college students followed by, in descending order, specific action cues, knowledge about premarital health checks, information on domestic premarital health check policies, conscious threats, and information on foreign premarital health check policies. Moreover, specific action cues play important intermediary roles in supporting knowledge on premarital health checks, conscious threats, and attitude toward premarital health checks. Conclusions The results indicated that attitude toward premarital health checks is the most important factor influencing the intent of college students to undergo premarital health checks and that specific action cues both play important intermediary roles in guiding said attitude and represent a factor that pushes college students to undergo said checks.
