Introduction: This study investigated the use of sporting facilities in Taoyuan County senior high schools and the difficulties and solutions related to the use of sporting facilities in physical education curriculums. Methods: Taoyuan County contains seven senior high schools. The seven interviewees in this study were physical education teachers and section chiefs who had been working at the seven schools since they were founded. Data were collected through document analysis, in-depth interviews, field surveys, and observations. Results: The seven schools all contain ball game areas, athletics fields, and gyms. To enrich the content of physical education curriculums, sporting facilities should be characterized by good design and diversification. Physical education classes are sometimes conducted in areas with limited space. To enable teaching activities to be conducted without hindrance from limited space, a maximum is established regarding the number of physical education classes that can be scheduled simultaneously, thereby avoiding overuse of single areas. Regarding campus planning, the demands of sporting areas in schools are not considered. Consequently, limited space for physical education classes and poor design of sports areas are the two main problems. Conclusion: 1. Regarding the application of sports areas for physical education classes, the design and planning of sports areas in these schools are varied and multifunctional. 2. To enable teaching activities to be conducted without hindrance from limited space, a maximum is established regarding the number of physical education classes that can be scheduled simultaneously, thereby avoiding overuse of single sports areas. Solutions to problems such as how physical education classes are to be conducted on rainy days depends on the number of classes occurring during one class period and the number of areas equipped for conducting classes on rainy days. 3. Using sports areas, negotiating the proper allocation of sports areas for physical education classes with school section chiefs, and assuming an active role in creating more space for physical education classes are three methods for improving the situation. Funding should be sought to improve old sports buildings and facilities. Moreover, active planning for use of vacant campus spaces is an effective strategy for improving the current situation.
