Hypomineralized Second Primary Molars-A Case Report

Enamel hypomineralization is a qualitative defect of the enamel caused by a disturbance during initial calcification and/or during the maturation phase of enamel formation. Hypomineralized defects have been observed on second primary molars and are described as Hypomineralized Second Primary Molars (HSPM). This case report illustrates a 4-year-1-month-old girl who presented hypomineralized defects in all second primary molars. Initially these teeth developed normally but the enamel began to show areas of weakness, followed by breakdown. Caries developed on the breakdown site. After removing the caries and porous enamel, the four second primary molars were restored with stainless steel crowns to protect them from further breakdown and caries development. It is crucial to diagnose HSPM as early as possible to reduce the vulnerability of the affected primary molars by focusing on their preventive and restorative treatments.
