Research of the Relationship Between Lip Seal Force and Oral Habits, Dento-Facial Morphology Among Elementary Students in Penghu County, Taiwan

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between children's maximum lip seal force (MLSF) and occlusion and facial morphology in Penghu country, Taiwan. At present, most patients with malocclusion are treated priority in the alignment of dentition. However, many literatures in the past have pointed out the importance of peri-oral muscle forces and reported that the muscle strength also affects the alignment of the teeth and the occlusion. The global myofunction therapy for the mixed dentition has also begun to focus on the intervention of surrounding soft tissue. The aim of this project is to examine whether the lip seal force is significantly related to dental and facial morphology and even oral habits through clinical examamination, force measurement and parental questionnaires among children in Taiwan (Penghu). The results showed that (1) facial type, (2) length of philtrum, (2) overjet of anterior teeth, (4) mouth breath were statistically significantly correlated (P<0.05) to MLSF.
