Purpose: This study was to evaluate the effects of twelve weeks of Whole-body vibration training on the shot speed and decuple jump performance of young female handball players. Methods: The subjects for the study were 20 senior high school handball players separated into an experimental group and a control group with equal number of players by purpose sampling. During the twelve weeks period of study, both groups underwent routine training, but the experimental group received additional Whole-body vibration Training (amplitude: 8 mm, frequency: 20 ~ 40 Hz) three times per week for twelve consecutive weeks. The Penalty-throw was used to measure handball shot speed while decuple jump performance was counter movement jump (CMJ) and evaluated by the total distance covered. Single factor ANCOVA was used to examine the differences between the groups after training with pretest values as a covariate and the significance was set at α = .05. Results: After twelve weeks Whole-body vibration training, the experimental group players had significantly (p < .001) increased both shot speed (68.10 ± 1.66 km/hr vs. 62.20 ± 2.39 km/hr,) and the 9 m cross-stride shot speed (72.40 ± 2.50 km/hr vs. 65.70 ± 3.92) and the experimental group players had significantly (p < .01) improved the total distance of decuple jump (22.15 ± 1.32 m vs. 20.36 ± 0.91 m) and the maximal height of CMJ (33.00 ± 3.06 cm vs. 30.74 ± 2.89 cm, p < .001). Conclusions: From these results it is cleared that additional Whole-body vibration training could improve the shot speed and decuple jump performance in young female handball players. Therefore, it is recommended that coaches incorporate Whole-body vibration training into the handball training course.
