在「做」與「是」之間-戳破老的迷思

In between "Doing" and "Being," Exposing the Myth of Aging

並列摘要

Ageism is a serious issue among Singapore Chinese churches. Biblically, we should respect the elderly as old age is a blessing of God. However, in practice, the elderly are often marginalized in the church as it is in the secular world. The root of this issue lies in our attitude towards aging. Both the church and the elderly have this propensity to behave like a "Martha" than a "Mary." Moreover, Singapore, as an economic-based nation, overly stresses that our survival depends on high productivity and efficiency. This in turn conjures up a negative image of the elderly who is no longer productive and efficient. The elderly becomes a problem and thus a burden to the nation. Undiscerningly, the church also adopts valuing doing over being. Drawing insights from theologians, missiologists and gerontologists, the shackles of ageism can be broken.
