Investigation of the Acculturation between Hakka and Pingpu in Wanluan Township Pingtung

This study continued our field survey about folklore activities on the East Coast between local Pingpu Makatto and Hakka people in the past few years. What we concerned was whether the Pingpu Makatto, Hakka and Hoklo ethnic groups maintain the same folk activities in the Pingtung Plain. By field investigation and structured interviews, we visited 7 villages and interviewed 17 respondents include Hakka, Pingpu Makatto, Hoklo and people with intermarriage background. We tried to understand the current situation and differences between these people on folklore activities such as: the winter solstice, Chinese New Year's Eve worship, posting Wufu paper and setting up God censer. This field investigation began from June 2017 to the end of September 2018. In the past years, we once inferred that related folk activities of the Pingpu Makatto might come from contacting Hakka group, but we found there were more similarities between local Hoklo ethnic group and Pingpu Makatto in this study. Overall they were more similar to each other in folk activities. They stick the rice dumplings on the front door in winter solstice, they all pasted the five blessings paper, and they didn't worship God in the midnight of the Chinese New Year's Eve. We found God censer in their house. However, there were quite a few differences between these folk activities in the Hakka villages we surveyed. Although these Hakka villages were similar in terms of sticking Wufu paper, but they do not necessarily have independent God censer and they won't stick the rice dumplings on the wall except limited to very few old people. And there was difference between Hakka village about the midnight worship God in the Chinese New Year's Eve. Because all these finding, we rather to believe that the related folk activities of the Pingpu Makatto might come from the influence of the Hoklo ethnic group they met in much more earlier year.
