A comparative study of functional results of Intra-articular distal radius fractures treated with volar locking plates with or without arthroscopic assistance

並列摘要

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to evaluate whether wrist arthroscopy of intra-articular distal radius fracture (DRF) treated with volar locking plates affects the functional or radiological results. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted to identify all patients with an intra-articular DRF. Between May 2012 and July 2013, twenty patients with intra-articular fractures of the distal radius underwent arthroscopically- and fluoroscopically-assisted open reduction and internal fixation with volar locking plate. Another group of twenty patients underwent similar treatment but without the use of wrist arthroscopy. The patients were evaluated functionally and radiologically and follow-up for a minimum of 24 months. The Mayo modified wrist score was used to evaluate functional recovery at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months postoperatively. Results: All fractures united. The wrists range of motion and grip strength improved from the 3-month to the 24-months follow-up in both groups and there were no significant difference between both groups. The mean Mayo modified wrist score also did not differ significantly between both groups at the 24-month followup. Conclusions: Both groups were associated with improvement in terms of wrists range of motion, grip strength and function as measured with the Mayo modified score. Our preliminary results showed that the functional results of the two groups did not statistically differ during the follow-up period in this study.
