解讀晚清小說中的「騙子」形象

Interpretation of the Images of "Cheater" of Late-Qing Novels

摘要


晚清中國,無疑是一個震盪不安、中西文化衝擊的時代。一批致力於小說創作的知識分子,追隨著「小說界革命」的口號旗幟,投入以小說啟迪民智之思維浪潮,從而產生鉅量的小說作品,而此亦成為研究晚清社會/文化的重要場域。儘管晚清小說的藝術成就未能獲得一致性的美學評價,然其人物形象所展現的社會意義,卻也是論者無法忽略的重要部分。因此,本文嘗試分析闡述「晚清四大小說雜誌」作品中的「江湖騙子」、「宗教騙子」與「官場騙子」人物形象,期望藉由探討較少為人關注的騙子人物形象分析,理解並印證瀰漫在晚清社會中的迷信與官場行騙現象,進而勾勒並深化處於新舊交織的晚清社會,其所呈現出來的,某些仍受制於傳統質素(騙文化)深刻影響的生活景象。

Late-Qing China was definitely a turbulent time under the impact of both the Eastern and the Western cultures. Following the slogan "Revolution in the Field of Novels," a group of intellectuals devoted themselves to writing novels to enlighten people. As a result, a large number of novels were written and the works became an important field for studying the society / culture in Late-Qing. Although the artistic achievement of Late-Qing novels couldn't acquire aesthetic appraisal consistently, yet the social meaning of the images of the characters in the novels was so important that the writer wouldn't ignore. Therefore, this article tries to analyze the images of the characters of "swindlers", "religious impostors", and "impostors of officialdom," those less concerned, in "The Late-Qing Four Major Periodicals" to understand and prove the status of superstition and deception in officialdom in Late-Qing society. Based on the analysis, the article then describes and interprets the Late-Qing society interleaved with the old and new elements, which presented the life under some factors of tradition (cheating culture).
