Creating and Disseminating Establishment Stories: A Case Study of the Chinese Community in Johor Bahru

本文以新山華人社會為例，探討人們如何塑造與傳播開埠故事，以及誰在訴說、為何訴說這個開埠故事。本文以新山中華公會的會刊、新山華族歷史文物館的展覽以及新山柔佛古廟與其遊神為材料，指出新山華人社會的開埠故事如何藉由文本與儀式來打造和傳播，以及新山的政治、經濟和社會結構自1970年代以來的變化等内外因素，如何影響開埠故事的塑造與傳播。

Taking the Chinese community in Johor Bahru as a case study，this article investigates how people created and spread the stories of the establishment of cities, with a focus on the narrators of the establishment stories and the reasons behind the narratives. Using primary resources of the publications from Tiong-Hua Association of Johor Bahru, and materials from the Johor Bahru Chinese Heritage Museum's exhibitions, the Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple and its annual Chingay parade, this article shows that the establishment narratives were generated and disseminated through both texts and rituals. The changes in politics, economy, and social structure in Johor Bahru since the 1970s have made an impact on shaping and disseminating its establishment story.
