PDMS Membrane Mass Transport Characteristics in a Volatile Organic Compound Detector by Computer Simulation

In the environmental chemical research, identification of chemicals in the environment is the first thing to do before assessing their possible adverse effect on ecology and human being. In recent years, due to the revolution of real-time detection technology, it is possible to identify the low concentration organic compounds. The real-time portable volatile organic compound analyzer adopted in this study to measure the benzene and toluene vapors were combined with a portable time-of-flight mass spectrometers (TOF-MS) and polydimethylsilicone (PDMS) membranes. Moreover, a Berkeley Madonna program was used to build a MIMS simulation model to reveal the mass transformation characteristics in PDMS membranes. Feasibility of further operation revision and instrument modification to improve the precision and accuracy of MIMS were discussed in this study by the computer modeling simulation data.
