Road traffic accidents are one of the top ten causes of casualties in all around the world. It accounts for a significant portion of the disease burden worldwide. According to Population Reference Bureau, in 2018, an estimated 1.35 million people were killed in road crashes, and as many as 50 million are injured, occupying 30 percent to 70 percent of orthopedic beds in developing countries hospitals. This research explores the effect of driver’s safety attitude and risk perception on driving behavior to have a better approach to improve traffic safety as well as reducing the traffic accidents. An online survey and paper survey (at office, house, bus station, etc.) is designed and implemented in three cities which are Hanoi, Yenbai, Laocai in Vietnam to collect the revealed responses of drivers regarding risk perception and safety attitude, particularly for driving behavior. The data of 500 drivers in three cities were subjected to exploratory factor analysis, which extracted eight factors from 48 items of the questionnaire. Those factors were further subjected to confirmatory factor analysis for validating constructs of risk perception on road system, risk perception on using road system, safety attitude, and driving behavior comprising four-factor of traffic rules, careless driving, multi-tasking, aggressive driving. A structural equation model is further employed to investigate the effects of driver’s risk perception and driver’s safety attitude on driving behavior. The analysis result reveals that there is a significant positive correlation between driver’s risk perception and safety attitude that both of it significantly affect the driver’s driving behavior. This research provides analytical insights into the transport system as well as traffic safety. Such findings can contribute a part of the database for the planning, design, and operation of a transportation system.
