This study used the elderly who are over 60 years old, having reading habits and using the Taipei City Library (Main Library) reading service as subjects, and conducted this research by using semi-structured in-depth interviews and questionnaires. The study aims to explore: Ⅰ. The behaviors of seniors’ reading. In aspect of traditional reading behaviors, the interviewers’ frequency of reading is “every day”. The time of reading is “1-3 hours”. The type of reading is mainly “newspaper”. The theme of reading is “General Category”. The quantity of readings per month is “unfixed time”. The channels for reading resources are mainly “traditional interpersonal community” and “libraries”. The reading time is mostly “evening”. The reading place is “at home”, for reading purposes or the motivations are “broadening their horizons” and “keeping health”. Half of the participants are “willing” to share their reading experience with others; the other half are “unwilling” to, and the interviewers’ monthly reading costs are “no cost.” Ⅱ. The senior citizens’ viewpoints on the support of reading services in public libraries. i. Reading resources: On the borrowing of traditional books, books and their conditions are relatively old; the speed of returning still needs to be improved, and the book borrowing channel is quite convenient. The terms of operating the digital reading resources, the operational processes and font sizes can be further enhanced. ii. Support for the equipment of reading space: Reading space is relatively compressed; in addition, because of the large number of readers, it is difficult to take care of sanitation. The hardware equipment is relatively old, too. iii. Reading promotion activities: In terms of contents, it is more difficult to take into account the needs of all respondents on the themes, teachers and instructional designs. In the digital promotion channel of the activity, some respondents are not good at using digital operations, so they cannot really get the relevant information of the event. iv. The public library digital reading service: Most of the respondents have high willingness and participation in the related digital courses such as information literacy and digital reading skills. v. Librarians’ attitudes: A small number of readers indicated that the librarians had lower enthusiasm and kindness when providing services. What’s more, most of the respondents indicated that they would like to be serviced by a librarian who has patience and empathy, having sufficient library professionalism to provide professional reading services. It is expected that the results of this study would be given to the Taipei City Library (the General Assembly) as reference when promoting reading activities. According to the research results, this study suggests the following five major recommendations: Ⅰ. The reading resources: Timely repair or deal with those books in poor condition; strengthen the updates and purchases of those books of best-selling topics, and make the digital operating system easier, or set up an information desk next to the digital reading operation area to solve the readers’ problems. Ⅱ. Support for reading space equipment: Hardware equipment can be replaced in a timely manner, as for the operation and use of the computer, librarians can provide professional assistance and services. Ⅲ. Reading Promotion Activities: Before the event, the senior citizens should be surveyed in advance, so that the activities could be designed to meet their needs better. In terms of the ways of the event promotion, we can also cooperate with the relevant organizations of the seniority to ensure that the event information can be exactly delivered. Ⅳ. The public library digital reading service: Provide a variety of digital related courses for senior citizens, and increase their willingness to participate in the curriculums in different forms or ways to enhance their information. Ⅴ. Librarians’ attitudes: Librarians can boost the professional knowledge services for senior citizens and increase empathy toward senior citizens.
