The effect of Fidelity on 3D rendering in visual thinking of design development stage

Abstract Interior design mainly uses spaces to present the concept of beauty. Interior designers who are accustomed to using 3D drawings have been bringing it into the process of design development. Designers think and construct their designs in a virtual space to map out the sense of space, the split ratio, effects of lights, the combination of different materials, etc., which would help to create 3D renderings when developing a design and make adjustments accordingly through visual thinking. This in turns increases efficiency during design development and the accuracy for the results of design thinking and thus successfully convey design ideas. This research discusses the differences in fidelity between software. Fidelity would affect visual thinking and behavioral patterns during the drawing process which would further affect the fluency and accuracy in design development. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to better understand the differences in fidelity among various software. To achieve this, cases and questionnaires are used to look into the differences in fidelity among different 3D drawing software, and verifications on how visual thinking is used as perceived behavior to determine fidelity are presented in this research. Furthermore, protocol analysis is used to experiment how the differences in fidelity affect visual thinking. Using the coding system to analyze the steps when producing 3D renders and observe how the fidelity of rendering outcomes affects respondents’ reaction and decision, how the differences in fidelity influence the design development process is better understood. The scope of this research is limited to the first stage of the designing process, which is after designing concepts are being developed, and the deepening and developing process of a single person. 3D drawings are used to assist in design thinking in order to observe the rendering result for determining the sense of beauty and whether it is reasonable. 3D renders are generally used after designs are completed to better the efficiency in communication and expression. However, 3D renders act as a role which assists in the design development in this research; through observing the fidelity presented to trigger visual thinking in order to progress with the 3D rendering process. The results analyzed by this research clearly identifies the pros and cons of various 3D drawing software that are commonly used in the field of interior design and also the differences in fidelity produced by software. In addition, the results also confirm the logic and methods of perceived behavior when looking at 3D renders. Additionally, the analysis of the coding results of protocol analysis also indicates respondents’ visual thinking and behavioral patterns of each step when drawing. Thus, this research realizes how visual thinking behavior affects the 3D designing process. Through higher fidelity, the amount of time for thinking and making decisions are reduced when drawing which makes the design presented to be aligned with the contents which the designers have in mind. As a result, using 3D renders can express one’s design more accurately.
