The recent concepts and sensorimotor developmental data bases of young children were provided in this article. The authors reviewed related articles and offered the data base collected from 3703 children (3-72 month olds) and l2lchildren (6-12 year olds) in Taiwan between 1995 to 1996. This article reviewed the areas in the development of various sensory and perceptual functions, also including the review in the gross motor, fine motor and balance functional domains. The sensory functions were reviewed on the aspects of visual, hearing, proprioceptive and vestibular sensations. The perceptual functions were reviewed on the aspects of whole-part, figure-ground, space, kinesthetic and other perceptions. The development milestones in gross motor, fine motor and balance function derived from the authors' studies were also presented in this article. We hope this article can enhance the quality of services provided by the clinicians in early intervention programs.
