Mobility (i.e. capacity of moving) is not only the necessary condition for us to participate in the social processes but also the expression of social power. In a patriarchal society, there is gender difference in mobility. The phenomena of moving are coded with sexual significance, and mobility itself is an important element in terms of which the gender boundary is constructed. This article uses the concept of transvestism, which implies the transgression of gender boundary, to enquire into the symbolic relationship between mobility and gender construction. The division between public sphere and private sphere, the right to the use of vehicles, and the gender coding of vehicles are all involved in the symbolic construction and transgression of the gender boundary of mobility. Thus the construction of gender and the formation of gendered-subject are closely related to mobility and to the why, how and who of moving.
