A Study on Fines Content Affect the Static and Dynamic Resistances Based on Inter-granular Void Ratio

Traditionally global void ratio is well known for judging the soil density and engineering behavior for cohesionless soils. However the presence of fines particles, global void ratio is not enough to explain the behavior. In the study, we investigated the influence of fines on the static and dynamic resistance of silty sands by experimental way. In addition, the testing results were further analyzed with accompanied intergranular void ratio concept. For completing the goals, an experimental program was undertaken. A series of cyclic CU tests and static CD tests were performed, and two types of sands such as Kaohsiung river sands and Ottawa sands were adopted for comprehensive study. Because fines particles exist, the experimental results indicate that the cyclic resistance and static shear strength decrease with increasing fines content. Since global void ratio seems not to describe the strength of silty sands with grain fines, intergranular void ratio modified and identified in the study has a good explanation.
