The term of "hydrogels" was first proposed at 1960, indicating that hydrogels have been developed for around 60 years. Hydrogels have the advantage of adsorbing large amounts of water, controable swelling ratios, and low toxicity which can be easily applied biomaterials, tissue engineering, green energy...an so on. In order to expand its applicability, the mechanical property of hydrogels has become one of the main focuses in resent years. Herein, we introduce characteristics and mechanisms of double network hydrogel, and extend the chemical structures in developments of high strength hydrogels in recent years and the application of robust living radical polymerizations to hydrogel design.
