電子系統品牌廠商開發自有晶片策略之探討

摘要


自有晶片設計對於電子系統品牌廠商是一個可以帶來產品差異化的選項,但由於自行完成晶片設計與製造所需的投資過於巨大,電子系統品牌廠商長久以來都是採取外購半標準化晶片的方式來完成電路層級的產品設計。但近年可以發現有些電子系統品牌廠商開始嘗試透過矽智財授權、積體電路設計服務、積體電路製造代工服務等半導體與積體電路產業的分工發展來設計自己的晶片,有些廠商甚至已經藉由自有晶片獲得了可觀的產品差異化優勢;不過,雖然研發自有晶片開始變成可行的選項,但目前仍然屬於一項高度風險的投資。 本論文將探討這項議題,討論範圍從半導體積體電路的產業發展演進是如何讓設計自有晶片變成可行,到進一步利用個案研究法來分析三個目前已經成功完成至少一項自有晶片專案的電子系統品牌廠商;主要透過商業模式探討和產業五力分析模型來找出廠商的相似之處,並透過一些文獻的觀點來印證發展自有晶片能帶給這些廠商的資源與能力;最後將進一步嘗試整理出適合發展的自有晶片的電子系統品牌廠商屬性,希望提供給之後準備評估此項投資的廠商一些方向:應先評估自身的資源能力定位是否符合、以及目標產品的生命週期是否符合;若能夠符合,則可以再進一步評估企業所專注之價值與所屬產業未來突破之機會,進而判斷是否能用研發自有晶片來創造未來的機會。

In-House chip development is a possible solution for electronics brands to create the product differentiation. However, as chip design and manufacture requires huge investment, purchasing the semi-standard chips from chip design companies to complete the circuit-level product design has been the popular solution for long time. But recently, we found there were some electronics brands put efforts in designing their own chips by leveraging the services from design service companies, silicon intelligent property providers, and foundries. Furthermore, by developing their own in-house chips, some electronics brands obtained considerable product differentiation advantages. Although in-house chip development has become a viable option, it is still a high-risk investment. In this thesis, we firstly elaborate that how the industrial progress of semiconductor and integrated circuits makes in-house chip development feasible. Then we use the case study approach and try to apply business model and Porter’s five-forces model to analyze three electronics brands which have completed at least one in-house chip project. In addition, we try to indicate how in-house chip development can bring the resource and capability to the electronics brands through some literature review. We also try to conclude some characteristics of the electronics brands which are suitable for in-house chip development. We hope to provide the directions for other electronics brands which are trying to assess in-house chip investment: they should evaluate their own resource and capability along with the product life cycle of their products; if all matched, they can further evaluate the value they are focusing on and also the future opportunities in their industries to find how in-house chip development can make them different.
