The purpose of this study was to test the psychometric properties of the Clinical Useful Depression Outcome Scale (CUDOS), which was developed by Mark Zimmerman et. al, in Taiwanese diabetic patients. CUDOS contains 18 items including all the major depression and minor depression sypmtoms in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Psychiatric Disorders, 4th edition, psychosocial disability, and impact on daily life. This study examined the internal consistency, test-retest reliability, convergent validity, concurrent validity, and predictive ability of the CUDOS for the World Health Organization Quality of Life brief version after translating the CUDOS into Chinese version. Included in this study were 127 diabetic patients including 112 patients without depression and 15 patients with a depression diagnosis. The Cronbach’s Alpha (α) was .932 for the CUDOS. The CUDOS scores between the two testings were not significantly different (p= .332). The test-retest Spearman’s correlation coefficient was .842 (p< .001). The correlation between the CUDOS and the Beck Anxiety Inventory was .736 (p< .001). The CUDOS scores between the depressive and non-depressive groups were significantly different. The Spearman’s correlation coefficient between the CUDOS and the Beck Depression Inventory was .876 (p< .001). The CUDOS score could independently predict quality of life after adjusting for confourdes (F=2.885, p= .006; Adjusted R2= .115). The result of this study indicated that The Chinese version of the CUDOS had satisfactory reliability and validity for use in Taiwanese diabetic patients.
