Fragrance is one of the distinctive characteristics of wood. In this study, the fragrant constituents of three coniferous woods grown in Taiwan, namely Taiwania cryptomerioides, Cunninghamia lanceolata, and Chamaecyparis obtuse var. formosana, were investigated. Three kinds of fragrant cadinane type terpenoids, including T-cadinol, T-muurolol and α-cadinol, were isolated and identified from Taiwania cryptomerioides. Fragrant needle-like crystals collected from sawn and dried cross-section surface of Cunninghamia lanceolata were identified as cedrol. In addition, two fragrant constituents, α-terpineol and α-cadinol, were isolated and identified from Chamaecyparis obtusa var. formosana.
