Leaf senescence is the final stage of leaf development with many occurring physiological events including cell structure degradation and nutrient recycle etc. For deciduous woody plants, leaf senescence attracts people because of the coloration and signaling the end of a growing season. In the past, research on herbaceous model plants was abundant. However, leaf senescence research in woody model plants was just started. With the help of improved experimental technology, non-model woody plant such as Betula pendula can be studied directly. In this study, definition and related topics of leaf senescence were introduced, and several articles related to research in woody plants were reviewed and discussed.
