Outpatient Peritoneal Dialysis Initiation in Percutaneous Insertion of a Catheter by a Nephrologist

BACKGROUND: Outpatient dialysis initiation is associated with better clinical outcomes. Outpatient-start peritoneal dialysis (PD) became possible with emerging urgent-start PD. We reported outcomes of our urgent-start PD in outpatient and inpatient settings. METHODS: All outpatient- and inpatient-start PD patients in Asia University Hospital between March 2017 and December 2018 were analyzed. Percutaneous catheter insertion followed an ultrasound-guided Seldinger technique in a ward-based procedure room. RESULTS: A total of 74 patients started PD in Asia University Hospital and 22 (29.7%) of them were outpatients. Patients' basal characteristics including uremic symptoms were not different between inpatients and outpatients. The outcomes including leaks (peri-catheter and others), catheter dysfunction and/or catheter migration, exit-site infections, and peritonitis were not different between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Outpatient PD initiation in PD catheter insertion by a nephrologist is an acceptable alternative for patients who develop uremic symptoms and do not want to stay in a hospital.
