Within the last 2 years, the Kinki University School of Medicine has introduced anew curriculum. The motivation for new curriculum is strong among the teaching staff. One of the reasons is that some students could not finish all the previous medical curriculum in 6 years. We have introduced a tutorial system and a clinical clerkship.Thetutorial system was introduced in 1998 in year 2.Fortunately,students had a partial experience in the pre-tutorial education in year 1.This preliminary experience with the tutorial system made the students familiar to tutorial and the introduction of the tutorialsystem was smooth. We evaluated the tutorial system based on the students responses. The self-learning hours increased to about 1-2 hours/day,and they feel that tutorial system is tough but is enjoyable. In 1999,the year 2 and year 3 students use the full tutorialsystem. We have trained about 500 doctors as tutors. The tutorial system consists of 90weeks in total, with 2 weeks in 1998 and 1 week in 1999 dedicated to pharmacology. This period is not long enough to perform pharmacological laboratory practice. However, pharmacology is partly included in the clinical pharmacology courses. The clinicalclerkship was introduced in both year 5 and year 6 in 1999.The students showed someresistance against clerkship because of a lack of previous experience by both teachingstaff and students. However, the curriculum committee and the clinical clerkship committee organized the workshop and also open consultation with students and/or othermedical staff. The introduction of both the tutorial system and the clinical clerkship insuch a short period has been successful in our University, though final evaluation of these curriculum will rest on the national board examination in future.
