The Evaluation of Anatomy Course Provided for the Nursing Students

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the learning attitude toward and the demand for an anatomy course on the part of nursing students. A total of 126 questionnaires were collected from 133 nursing students taking an anatomy course during the years 2001 to 2003 inclusively. The analysis of the questionnaires revealed that 75.9% of the participating students were, on average, satisfied with the anatomy curriculum. Nevertheless, 13.8% of total students responded to suggest that their study course for anatomy was only “just good enough” to satisfy the requisites of the obligatory examination, such an attitude having increased by 11% in recent two years. Multiple-choice questions were also applied in order to attempt to analyze the study resources used by nursing students in the conduct of this study course. It was found that 87.9% of students relied upon the syllabus with Chinese translations of anatomical terms in addition to attempting to read the original textbook when they were learning anatomy. Further analysis of questionnaire responses also revealed that most of the participating students agreed that the learning of anatomy was essential for establishing their basic medical knowledge. In this study, we also found that nursing students do have greater expectations for the quantity and the quality of anatomy laboratory instructions than was delivered in their study course. In conclusion, informative feedback regarding the learning attitude of nursing students participating in this study program as obtained from questionnaires will help us to improve our teaching skills and maintain a high level of nursing training. The implication from this study is that the appropriate interpretation of the study’s results will provide relevant suggestions for the future design of an appropriate anatomy course for nursing students.
