Blending Culture between Generations: Effectiveness of Learning Smart Phones through Museum Artifacts and Courses by Elders--Take "Telecom for Seniors" Project as an Example

This research focuses on the effectiveness of elders' knowledge of telecommunications technology through museum artifacts and courses. The research subjects are the participants of "Telecom for Seniors" project from the National Science and Technology Museum. The project is designed for the elders who are over the age of 55 and planned to visit telecom-themed showrooms, stereoscopic movie experiences and smart phone operation courses. It aims to increase the opportunities for elders to access telecommunications technology and to understand telecommunications technology from different perspectives. The study is divided into three stages to collect information. (1) Investigating the background variables of the participants and the smart phone functions they had used before the courses; (2) Investigating the mobile phone functions that the participants are willing to use, and the views of "Perceived ease of use" and "Perceived Usefulness" of smartphones by the end of the courses; (3) Interviews were implemented after six months, mainly to understand the participants' situation of mobile using and project effectiveness. The project were executed in four steps. 122 elders who are over the age of 55 participated the project and 119 valid questionnaires were collected. The study found that the project expands the scope of the use of smart phones by elders, increases the understanding and acceptance of the new technology by elders. Because of the project implementation, it brings the effectiveness of empowerment and it shortens the gap of elders' background differences. It also recalls the elders' memories by viewing artifacts and transforms their views of new technology. Establishing an emotional connection between participants and NSTM is the additional value of this event. The overall activity has a positive impact on the learning of smart phones for elders. However, considering the manpower, resources, time and physical exertion conditions of elders, the research still has some shortcomings. In order to take the reference for next project, we suggest to extend the scope and breadth of the research and to compare the effectiveness of participating museum and traditional smart phone courses.
