The all-too-common practice of covering up academic misconduct can have a corrupting influence on junior academics, thus leading to a cycle of falling standards in academic culture from one-generation to the next. This cycle would extend across the spectrum of higher education institutions, from national universities to private universities of science and technology. Declining academic integrity and incidences of malpractice will not cease until we straightforwardly discuss these issues, including an open disclosure of cases involving academic misconduct. It took me ten months to fight against one case of academic misconduct and the cover-up attempts by the authority involved. Eventually, the article was retracted, following my disclosure. It is hoped that this incident is can serve to encourage all Taiwanese scholars to compatriots. This would inspire global Academia to place greater trust in the integrity of Taiwanese academics.
