The Concept of B Vitamins in Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases

並列摘要

For more than 20 years, many case-control and cohort studies had demonstrated a positive correlation between elevated total plasma homocysteine and cardiovascular diseases. The total plasma homocysteine can be considered as a biomarker of folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 status since the relative levels of these nutrients can affect the total plasma homocysteine levels. This review will focus on the relationship among total plasma homocysteine, B vitamins and cardiovascular diseases. In addition, it attempts to explain the concept of B vitamins in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Finally, we suggest patients or consumers who are at high risk to be sure to get enough folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 in their food or from supplementation.
