Three nests of Collared Scops Owl (Otus lettia) were observed from November 2003 to March 2004 on the campus of National Taiwan University, Taipei, northern Taiwan. The estimated time of egg-laying was in early October to mid-November. This differs from the times recorded in forest environments of central Taiwan, which were in March, April, and July. Observations showed the food they consumed was diverse, including insects, frogs, birds, and small mammals. Results of the food residual analysis indicated that Chinese Bulbul (Pycnonotus sinensis), Red Collared-dove (Streptopelia tranquebarica), black rat (Rattus rattus), and house shrew (Suncus murinus) were predominant species. In addition, we observed various behaviors including a chick climbing up a tree, a threat display, and an adult providing protection, and also recorded 5 different adult calls and 4 different chick calls.
