Effect of Climatic Variability on Maize Production in Nigeria

並列摘要

The study examines the changes in climatic elements and agronomic parameter (maize hectarage and output) for maize production in different ecological zones of Nigeria from 1980-2002. The study also evaluated the degree of variability in these parameters. To achieve these objectives, secondary data on climatic elements and agronomic parameters for 22years were analysed using two-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Coefficient of Variation. The result revealed significant differences in average annual rainfall, temperature, maize hectarage and output in the seven identified ecological zones (p<0.05). Less variability was shown by annual temperature and rainfall over the years. Annual maize hectarage and output exhibited high variability in the ecological zones. Development of irrigation facilities and adoption of cultivation method that will reduce exposure of soil to flood and erosion among others are recommended for savannah and forest zones respectively.
