On the Study of Anti-Rumor Strategies in Social Networks

This thesis uses the approach of spreading an anti-rumor to combat a rumor spread in a social network. In the proposed model, instead of blind sharing anti-rumors, the receiver is forced to forward anti-rumors to one of his/her friends, who is named an anti-target. This study proposes four strategies: random, min-degree, max-degree, and less-common-friends, according to the friendship of the receiver with others, for determining the next anti-target. A simulation experiment is conducted based on the proposed model and the same experiment is repeated for many times. The experiment results show that: (1) the strategy of less-common-friends can combat the rumor more effectively than the other strategies; (2) the size of social network will not affect the efficiency of spreading anti-rumors; (3) when the probability of rewiring links in a small network becomes larger, it will lead to less effectively in spreading anti-rumors; (4) when the average number of friends in the social network is increased, it will lead to less effectively in spreading anti-rumors.
