An annotated checklist of the brachyuran crabs known thus far from the Taiwanese waters, including all the isles of its territory, together with citations, is compiled. The brachyuran fauna now stands at 800 native species, with three alien species, belonging to 35 superfamilies and 74 families. Nine new records are added through the present study, viz. Alainodaeus rimatara Davie, 1993 (Xanthidae), Bathypluma spinifer Saint Laurent, 1989 (Retroplumidae), Brusinia elongata (Sakai, 1969) (Brusiniidae), Haemocinus elatus (A. Milne-Edwards, 1873) (Planopilumnidae), Hemigrapsus takanoi Asakura and Watanabe, 2005 (Varunidae), Leucosia longimaculata Chen and Fang, 1991 (Leucosiidae), Metopograpsus frontalis Miers, 1880 (Grapsidae), Paradynomene tuberculata Sakai, 1963 (Dynomenidae) and Tauropus egeriae (Gordon, 1947) (Pilumnidae). The most diverse family is the Xanthidae while the best studied is the Ocypodidae. Over 250 brachyuran species have been added to the Taiwanese fauna over the last decade, with a good part of these being deep-water taxa. Among them, 75 species are now known from Kinmen and Matsu, of which 12 not known from Taiwan proper; with 76 species recorded from the Dongsha Island and Taiping Island, of which 11 are not known from the main island thus far. The species endemic to Taiwan and other islands are also briefly discussed. It is expected that with increased sampling, the total number of brachyuran species will still increase substantially over the years.
